All of Origins is now available here.
UPDATE
I would like to address the state of several things before getting to the actual point of this blog post. Recently there hasn’t been any news regarding the state of our work – however, I would like to assure you we are still working hard on completing our projects. So far the problems have been centered around inactive projects managers, which have lead us into some staff changes.
To counter this, I would like to officially announce that all chapters from Ancient Chronicle‘s first serial to be published, Origins will be available starting February 1st. Moreover, we plan to have a coordinated launch in the fan-based community of Bzpower in the form of several topics within the General Discussion forum, with the ultimate goal to promote our work into the general public.
I will try to keep everyone updated on our progress more frequently from now and on. Any questions and comments regarding further progress are welcomed.
The State of Lesovikk’s Hiatus
Status
It’s probably very clear at this point that we haven’t made much progress on the Lesovikk’s Hiatus contest, in that we haven’t announced it on BZPower since the forums returned, nor have we provided an adequate update on how things are going.
This is partly because of my scatter-mindedness (sorry about that), but also because of we haven’t had the chance to properly contact Greg about the future of canon contests. Once we can our confirmation (or, if the worst case scenario happens and it turns out canon contests are a no-no), we will make progress as swiftly as possible or make alternate arrangements.
I hope you can understand that the past few weeks have been extremely busy and chaotic at times for both me and the rest of the KJP board, and we apologize for the inconvenience.
P.S. Look forward shortly to our full BZP launch which will involve official KJP and Solis Magna and Solar System topics, along with other news, and check out our new Google+ page!.

Lesovikk’s Hiatus
Welcome to the KanohiJournal Contest #5: Lesovikk’s Hiatus. This is part one of the contest, focusing on Lesovikk’s hiatus during the period of 100,000 years ago.
About
Lesovikk’s Hiatus (100,000 Before Teridax’s Reign (B.T.R.)) is part one of a 3-part contest series, and deals with Lesovikk’s adventures during his “Hiatus” which took place during the between the 0-45,000 years after the murdering of the rest of his team, leading up to 55,000 years B.T.R.
Participants of the contest is invited to write up a story based on Lesovikk’s adventures within a portion of this period of time, and are welcomed to utilize existing plot elements or add in their own.
The contest is ongoing as of now and the entry period will run for at least two months. We will confirm the closing date at a later point.
Polling and Judging
The official details for this have not been determined. It is likely that we will have polling, then followed by judging. Procedures will be determined at a later date.
The following are contest assistants for this contest:
- Tyler Durden (spawnieoftawiki@gmail.com)
- Lord Nektann (lordnektann@gmail.com)
Prizes
The winning entries will be accepted into the official canon and made into a book that will be released under KanohiJournal Publishing.
Background Storyline Information
Please read this section thoroughly alongside the rules.
Current Information on Lesovikk’s Hiatus
■Lesovikk met Jovan sometime during his travels, and Jovan coached Lesovikk on fighting styles and ideas before Lesovikk continued his travels.
■Lesovikk fought the Rahi Nui at some point of his travels.
■He freed an island infested with Visorak during this time.
■At some point of his journey, Lesovikk explored the southern islands.
■Lesovikk also fought a wounded Rock Lion at some point of his travels, but was defeated after a long and difficult battle.
Please note that you are only allowed to use up to two of the above events per person. If you need additional material, you are free to create your own. It is not necessary for you to use any of the events above, however.
Faction Formation Dates
Please check this before you use any factions in your story, as factions are formed at different dates and may affect your story.
■The Hand of Artakha is disbanded at around the same time when Lesovikk’s team was killed. As any overlaps in time period is negligible or non-existent, you may not use the Hand of Artakha in your entry.
■The Order of Mata Nui was formed shortly after the disbanding of the Hand of Artakha. The Order did not place agents on different islands until 79,100 years ago. Please see the rules for restrictions on the Order of Mata Nui.
■The Brotherhood of Makuta was formed around the same time as the Order of Mata Nui, and was led by Miserix until Teridax overthrew him at around 79,100 years ago and began enacting his Plan. However, there is no clear note on just when did the populace started viewing the Brotherhood as a “force of evil”, and it is very likely that they remained as a force of good in the eyes of the populace during the period set forth in this contest. If you choose to utilize the Brotherhood in your entry, we strongly recommend you to avoid forming a clear stance on the Brotherhood’s morality.
■The League of Six Kingdoms was formed 94,000 years ago. They were captured and sent to the Pit about 80,000 years ago.
■The Dark Hunters were formed between 80,000 – 70,000 years ago. Please be sure to check up on which Dark Hunters were active between 80,000 – 55,000 years ago before utilizing them in your story. If in doubt, the best option would be to avoid using that particular Dark Hunter.
■Toa teams form at different times. If you are planning to use a Toa in your entry, make sure you check up on whether the Toa acted as an individual or was part of a team during the time period where your entry is set in. If you are planning to create a new Toa for your entry, you must ensure there is room for the Toa’s existence.
Other Points of Interest
■Keep in mind that Lesovikk’s hiatus is similar to a self-imposed exile. Therefore, it is unlikely he will engage actively in social exchanges. However, Lesovikk’s primary goal is to make up for his failures, therefore he would likely try to help out where possible.
Rules
■You are allowed to submit:
■Three (3) short stories (disjointed stories) of between 500 to 5,000 words, OR
■One (1) novelette (a continuous story) of between 5,000-15,000 words, with breaks where appropriate.
■Any signs of continuity in your short story entries will cause your entry to be regarded as a novelette.
These are the LOWER and UPPER word limits. You can not have less or more than the minimum or maximum word limit. Therefore, it would be recommended for you to subtract 500 from the upper word limit and consider that as the maximum, to prevent you from going overboard.
■The story must be about Lesovikk’s journeys during his hiatus, between the time immediately after his team was killed and 55,000 B.T.R.
■The story must not be about Lesovikk travelling to Mahri Nui. That event should occur much later, in the third part of the contest.
■You are allowed to introduce new characters in your story, but they should be kept to a minimum and act as background characters. You are also allowed to name them, but any names will not be considered or recorded as canon, nor utilized in canon. If you choose to create names at any point, you must also provide another version of your story where the character’s name is either removed or replaced by a codename.
■Furthermore, you are strongly encouraged to only introduce new characters as individuals or in pairs.
■You may attribute new characters to the Order of Mata Nui. However, they must be utilized in your story in such a fashion that they do not inform Lesovikk of the Order’s existence or in any way which pertains to the possibility of Lesovikk being aware of the Order’s existence.
■If you choose to introduce new characters, the powers of the characters must remain sensible and appropriate. It is under our jurisdiction to bar an entry from being approved if we deem the powers of the characters as too powerful.
■If you choose to introduce new characters, and the character has a Kanohi mask, the following restrictions apply:
■Masks of Life, Creation, Time and Light must not be used.
■Mask of Dimensional Gates (Olmak) can only be used if Brutaka or the Toa from Jovan’s team who once had the mask is featured in the story.
■Mask of Shadows can only be used if Teridax is featured in the story.
■Immoral masks cannot be used by Toa.
■You can not introduce new masks.
■You can not resolve existing storyline details or create meaning for existing storyline material.
■Legendary powers cannot be used by any characters. The element of Light can only be utilized by Av-Matoran if they are utilized. The powers of Light and Shadow may be utilized by characters who wield them. (See Light and Shadow for users of the powers.)
■You can not introduce new elements and/or powers.
■You must follow the entry process below.
Entry Process
This contest is primarily based on the KanohiJournal, with contest discussion and notification topics set up on all major BIONICLE fansites and KanohiJournal affiliates’ project discussion sites. All instances of polling will take place on BZPower.
To see whether the site you visit is included in this contest, check the site for any KanohiJournal Contest #5: Lesovikk’s Hiatus contest topics. Please also take note of these points:
■IMPORTANT! – Do NOT send your entries to Mr. Greg Farshtey for him to check over/approve. Ask your friends/colleagues/contest assistants instead. If you are unsure whether your entry or parts of it conforms with canon, or have storyline-related questions, post your questions and concerns at the comment section at the bottom of this post or post them on forum discussion topics. We will then compile a list of valid enquiries and send them off to the BSS/Mr. Farshtey for you.
■Contest assistants will check over your entry primarily for storyline problems. They will approve/not approve your entry based on how well your storyline conform with the official canon.
■The priority for contest assistants is not to proofread your entry. You should always proofread your own entry or ask friends to help you. If you can’t find anybody to help you proofread, then you can ask nicely at any of the discussion topics and hopefully somebody will help you out. (They probably will)
■We need to stress that it is up to you to make sure your entry do well in polls and judging. Even if you submit an entry which is overly long/boring or difficult to read/filled with grammatical mistakes, but does not have any storyline problems, it will likely be approved. However, chances are, it wouldn’t get far in polls.
Participants can choose to submit their entries in either one of these two methods:
Submit via email (RECOMMENDED)
■Email jon.mess@madebyplast.com or lordnektann@gmail.com
All correct entries will be filed into the commments of this blog post, where contest assistants will read them and then approve them.
You can not modify large portions of your story after you have posted it. As the system stores a copy of every revision you make, we can very easily compare your changes and revert them/disqualify you based on our jurisdiction.
You may publish your story elsewhere (i.e. BZP’s Short Stories forum) for further review and feedback. However, we will only accept the copy you have on the KanohiJournal website, so be sure to edit that post as well if you want to make changes.
Submit via BZPower (NOT RECOMMENDED)
You may submit your entry via BZPower, by publishing your entry in the Short Stories forum. (or another appropriate forum if your story exceeds the word limit of the Short Stories forum.)
HOWEVER, if you choose to make any changes to your story, you must contact one of the contest assistants to authorize the change. Any unauthorized changes will lead to disqualification regardless of whether it is a minor or major change.
We do not guarantee that we will respond to your enquiries and requests, and we will not held responsible if you wish to make a change to your entry but receive no or inadequate responses from us. If you think you may end up making changes to your entry, we suggest you to submit via email instead and costs around the same amount of effort.
Got all that? Then start writing.
Hello, World
Whenever you’re handling websites, there’s always some risks involved. You have to prepare for hackers, or face sudden and unexpected downtime from web hosts, or in our case, blotch up our domain transfer process at the same time as BIONICLE ending.
So, those of you who are still active within the BIONICLE community would find that the KanohiJournal virtually disappeared from the face of the planet over the past few months. This was incredibly frustrating, as I was in the midst of preparing for exams and most the KJ staff were involved in other personal activities. We literally had no time and effort to work on the site from April to June.
But, thankfully, summer came. All of a sudden people started popping up again. I was free to work on the site again. Although my interest in the BIONICLE franchise has waned over its last year or so, I never wanted to give up the KJ. With some staff still dedicated to the project, and our affiliations with Mata Nui Inc. intact, we set out to bring back the KJ and get it running again, better and stronger than before.
New Problems
But it wasn’t just as easy as restarting the KJ. With BIONICLE over, and the story serials progressing so slowly, much of the fanbase had seeped away. We’re talking about a community of about 300 people dropped to around 100, if not less. The magazine model we had adopted for so many years simply wasn’t worth the effort for such a small audience. A magazine needs writers – it doesn’t help when those writers are no longer interested in its topic.
So, together with Spawn of Teridax/Jon and Shadow Kurahk/Purmou, we decided to do some serious rethinking about our aims and our goals. We looked at our projects at that time, Chronicles and KANOHI.novus. They were great ideas and had lots of potential, but with the state of the storyline and fanbase at that time, it wasn’t worth having them as stand-alone projects. So, we made a decision – cut the magazine, fuse Chronicles and KANOHI.novus, and brand it as one single entity known as the KanohiJournal Publications. From now on, instead of being a “BIONICLE Fan Magazine”, we’re going to become a publications entity – we are going to publish stuff like books, and stories, and games and all sorts of other stuff, not just as BIONICLE fans, but as LEGO fans.
New Website
With that decision made, we now had to look at how we used our website. The original website ran on WordPress, and that was very suitable for our role at that time. Now that we have been re-purposed, however, that no longer worked. Together, Purmou and I decided to scrap WordPress for the main site all together, instead coding a new, purpose-built website from scratch.
This was a very significant change. For the first time, we have complete control over how the website works, and looks. We can now do things which we previously could not do under WordPress. We can take advantage of all the web technologies available to us, and make a website which would be professional, modern, interactive and follows modern web standards, rather than the outdated, web 1.0 style which other BIONICLE websites currently use.
I think the results of that work is very obvious. If you compare us to any other BIONICLE or LEGO fansite, I think you will agree that our site is by far the most beautiful and modular one out there.
New Projects
I mentioned how we got rid of the original KanohiJournal, and replaced it with a fusion of Chronicles and KANOHI.novus. In order to get the new KanohiJournal Publications working, however, we obviously need good projects to work on.
Instead of the previous idea with Chronicles and K.n, however, where we pursued multiple areas, we decided to focus only four projects at one time. Two projects would be what we consider “major” undertakings, and the remaining two would be “minor” undertakings. These projects would also focus on franchises outside of BIONICLE, like Hero Factory, or Ninjago, or LEGO Universe. We will start off this year with only one “alien” project, but as time progress, you will find more and more of our projects focusing on other aspects of LEGO than BIONICLE.
Furthermore, I would like to announce that Solis Magna and Solar System will be the final “major” project which we will do for BIONICLE. Future BIONICLE projects will be handled by Mata Nui Inc. and will be viewed as minor undertakings.
New Staff
Last but not least, there’s our new team of staff members.
Unlike before, when the KJ had its own team of dedicated staff, the new KJP staff team would be composed of two groups of people: Those who were part of the original KJ team, and Mata Nui Inc. Although different members will be part of either team, they would all become part of the KanohiJournal Publications Team by default.
Furthermore, I’m glad to announce the formation of the KanohiJournal Publications Board. This board will take over my regular duties with the KJP and handle its operations, and consists of Jon, Purmou, Celu Krom and The Darkest Hunter. I will continue to be the Executive Chairman of Plast! Productions and hence have direct oversight and authority over the subsidary. Jon and Purmou are also the CEO and COO of Plast! Productions respectively.
Looking Beyond
With all these aspects, I am very confident that the KJP will sustain into the future and accomplish all sorts of exciting things. The KJP continues to see the participation of a diverse group of people from all around the world, bringing in all sorts of different values and ideas which would undoubtedly help us excel in ways which others can not. All in all, let us continue to strive to be the best BIONICLE (and now LEGO!) fan organization there is today!
LAUNCH OF THE LAUNCH
What’s up? Sorry this post is late, but hey, it’s not like launch went on without it. :3
Alright, so, here’s the deal with everything that’s being launched and when.
Ancient Chronicle: Origins, the first serial, will be released on launch day. The Grand Creation is being worked on right now, so that SHOULD be released soon after. The sequels, Altum Bellum and Price of Jealousy, will start production after that. Lein’s Tale, the proposed fifth serial, will still continue, but may or may not be a part of AC.
Awakenings: A three page prologue of Awakenings SHOULD be released at launch, but DH has been busy with computer troubles and real life responsibilities, so I don’t really know the status on that.
Solis Magna: The articles for Part 1, Matoran Universe, are done, and Pur is doing formatting right now along with some other last minute touches. We’re working on getting a team of artists together for the later parts; hit us up if you feel like doing some more work. :3
WorldScape: Polls and other opening day applications should start up on launch day.
Lesovikk’s Hiatus: Well, this is awkward. I had no clue that this was supposed to be ready by launch day. I’ve already got a judge or two put together, so two more tops and a new set of guidelines and we’re good to go.
Site’s looking pretty good, guys. Just some little touches.
It’s been a tough road, guys, but we’re almost there. Let’s power through, baby.
-Tyler
Glitters!
Server? Tick. Original domain? Yup. Awesome redesign? Heck yes.
That’s right, ladies and gentleman, the KanohiJournal is (almost) back! (Now as KanohiJournal Publications) After months of technical hiccups, we’ve finally sorted everything out and it’s (almost) business as usual.
Currently, we are just preparing everything for the final, big push. As a result, we’ve put the site up for public BETA so we can sort out any minor technical issues and making sure everything is functioning properly and looking neat.
Once we release officially, which should be in a week or so, you will have access to all the downloads we will be offering on the site. We will also be resuming the KanohiJournal Contest #5: Lesovikk’s Hiatus, and releasing the first fan-made BIONICLE book – the Solis Magna & Solar System Guide: Matoran Universe. (The entries submitted are all backed up and safe! We will be bringing them back online once the site is officially launched.)
An official introduction to the new site and details about the changes will also be provided when we launch, so don’t worry, your questions will be answered.
Everything you see here have been the culmination of the efforts by the KJ staff and those from Mata Nui Inc. We hope you enjoy the new changes, and look forward to the launch!
