Background Storyline Information
Please read this section thoroughly alongside the rules.
Current Information on Lesovikk’s Hiatus
■Lesovikk met Jovan sometime during his travels, and Jovan coached Lesovikk on fighting styles and ideas before Lesovikk continued his travels.
■Lesovikk fought the Rahi Nui at some point of his travels.
■He freed an island infested with Visorak during this time.
■At some point of his journey, Lesovikk explored the southern islands.
■Lesovikk also fought a wounded Rock Lion at some point of his travels, but was defeated after a long and difficult battle.
Please note that you are only allowed to use up to two of the above events per person. If you need additional material, you are free to create your own. It is not necessary for you to use any of the events above, however.
Faction Formation Dates
Please check this before you use any factions in your story, as factions are formed at different dates and may affect your story.
■The Hand of Artakha is disbanded at around the same time when Lesovikk’s team was killed. As any overlaps in time period is negligible or non-existent, you may not use the Hand of Artakha in your entry.
■The Order of Mata Nui was formed shortly after the disbanding of the Hand of Artakha. The Order did not place agents on different islands until 79,100 years ago. Please see the rules for restrictions on the Order of Mata Nui.
■The Brotherhood of Makuta was formed around the same time as the Order of Mata Nui, and was led by Miserix until Teridax overthrew him at around 79,100 years ago and began enacting his Plan. However, there is no clear note on just when did the populace started viewing the Brotherhood as a “force of evil”, and it is very likely that they remained as a force of good in the eyes of the populace during the period set forth in this contest. If you choose to utilize the Brotherhood in your entry, we strongly recommend you to avoid forming a clear stance on the Brotherhood’s morality.
■The League of Six Kingdoms was formed 94,000 years ago. They were captured and sent to the Pit about 80,000 years ago.
■The Dark Hunters were formed between 80,000 – 70,000 years ago. Please be sure to check up on which Dark Hunters were active between 80,000 – 55,000 years ago before utilizing them in your story. If in doubt, the best option would be to avoid using that particular Dark Hunter.
■Toa teams form at different times. If you are planning to use a Toa in your entry, make sure you check up on whether the Toa acted as an individual or was part of a team during the time period where your entry is set in. If you are planning to create a new Toa for your entry, you must ensure there is room for the Toa’s existence.
Other Points of Interest
■Keep in mind that Lesovikk’s hiatus is similar to a self-imposed exile. Therefore, it is unlikely he will engage actively in social exchanges. However, Lesovikk’s primary goal is to make up for his failures, therefore he would likely try to help out where possible.
Rules
■You are allowed to submit:
■Three (3) short stories (disjointed stories) of between 500 to 5,000 words, OR
■One (1) novelette (a continuous story) of between 5,000-15,000 words, with breaks where appropriate.
■Any signs of continuity in your short story entries will cause your entry to be regarded as a novelette.
These are the LOWER and UPPER word limits. You can not have less or more than the minimum or maximum word limit. Therefore, it would be recommended for you to subtract 500 from the upper word limit and consider that as the maximum, to prevent you from going overboard.
■The story must be about Lesovikk’s journeys during his hiatus, between the time immediately after his team was killed and 55,000 B.T.R.
■The story must not be about Lesovikk travelling to Mahri Nui. That event should occur much later, in the third part of the contest.
■You are allowed to introduce new characters in your story, but they should be kept to a minimum and act as background characters. You are also allowed to name them, but any names will not be considered or recorded as canon, nor utilized in canon. If you choose to create names at any point, you must also provide another version of your story where the character’s name is either removed or replaced by a codename.
■Furthermore, you are strongly encouraged to only introduce new characters as individuals or in pairs.
■You may attribute new characters to the Order of Mata Nui. However, they must be utilized in your story in such a fashion that they do not inform Lesovikk of the Order’s existence or in any way which pertains to the possibility of Lesovikk being aware of the Order’s existence.
■If you choose to introduce new characters, the powers of the characters must remain sensible and appropriate. It is under our jurisdiction to bar an entry from being approved if we deem the powers of the characters as too powerful.
■If you choose to introduce new characters, and the character has a Kanohi mask, the following restrictions apply:
■Masks of Life, Creation, Time and Light must not be used.
■Mask of Dimensional Gates (Olmak) can only be used if Brutaka or the Toa from Jovan’s team who once had the mask is featured in the story.
■Mask of Shadows can only be used if Teridax is featured in the story.
■Immoral masks cannot be used by Toa.
■You can not introduce new masks.
■You can not resolve existing storyline details or create meaning for existing storyline material.
■Legendary powers cannot be used by any characters. The element of Light can only be utilized by Av-Matoran if they are utilized. The powers of Light and Shadow may be utilized by characters who wield them. (See Light and Shadow for users of the powers.)
■You can not introduce new elements and/or powers.
■You must follow the entry process below.
Entry Process
This contest is primarily based on the KanohiJournal, with contest discussion and notification topics set up on all major BIONICLE fansites and KanohiJournal affiliates’ project discussion sites. All instances of polling will take place on BZPower.
To see whether the site you visit is included in this contest, check the site for any KanohiJournal Contest #5: Lesovikk’s Hiatus contest topics. Please also take note of these points:
■IMPORTANT! – Do NOT send your entries to Mr. Greg Farshtey for him to check over/approve. Ask your friends/colleagues/contest assistants instead. If you are unsure whether your entry or parts of it conforms with canon, or have storyline-related questions, post your questions and concerns at the comment section at the bottom of this post or post them on forum discussion topics. We will then compile a list of valid enquiries and send them off to the BSS/Mr. Farshtey for you.
■Contest assistants will check over your entry primarily for storyline problems. They will approve/not approve your entry based on how well your storyline conform with the official canon.
■The priority for contest assistants is not to proofread your entry. You should always proofread your own entry or ask friends to help you. If you can’t find anybody to help you proofread, then you can ask nicely at any of the discussion topics and hopefully somebody will help you out. (They probably will)
■We need to stress that it is up to you to make sure your entry do well in polls and judging. Even if you submit an entry which is overly long/boring or difficult to read/filled with grammatical mistakes, but does not have any storyline problems, it will likely be approved. However, chances are, it wouldn’t get far in polls.
Participants can choose to submit their entries in either one of these two methods:
Submit via email (RECOMMENDED)
■Email jon.mess@madebyplast.com or lordnektann@gmail.com
All correct entries will be filed into the commments of this blog post, where contest assistants will read them and then approve them.
You can not modify large portions of your story after you have posted it. As the system stores a copy of every revision you make, we can very easily compare your changes and revert them/disqualify you based on our jurisdiction.
You may publish your story elsewhere (i.e. BZP’s Short Stories forum) for further review and feedback. However, we will only accept the copy you have on the KanohiJournal website, so be sure to edit that post as well if you want to make changes.
Submit via BZPower (NOT RECOMMENDED)
You may submit your entry via BZPower, by publishing your entry in the Short Stories forum. (or another appropriate forum if your story exceeds the word limit of the Short Stories forum.)
HOWEVER, if you choose to make any changes to your story, you must contact one of the contest assistants to authorize the change. Any unauthorized changes will lead to disqualification regardless of whether it is a minor or major change.
We do not guarantee that we will respond to your enquiries and requests, and we will not held responsible if you wish to make a change to your entry but receive no or inadequate responses from us. If you think you may end up making changes to your entry, we suggest you to submit via email instead and costs around the same amount of effort.
Got all that? Then start writing.
